Cougar Town, “Cry to Me”: just give them what they want

Quick Take: Cougar Town, “Cry to Me”
“Oh my. To see Grayson cry would be like seeing... a double-rainbow.” – Jules

Review: Cougar Town, “Cry to Me”
(S0214) It’s Valentine’s Day for the cul-de-sac crew and what a way to celebrate it by remembering your worst Valentine’s memories. Laurie’s was about being in Miami and the man she slept with did not turn out to be Dan Marino, and Jules talks about her swordfish that wasn’t cooked all the way through at a restaurant. Grayson ends up telling them his dad died two years before on Valentine’s Day and the room goes silent. Ellie tries to get Grayson to talk about it, but he doesn't want to and this frustrates Jules.

For Valentine’s gifts, Jules wants Grayson to cry, Ellie wants Andy not to do anything for her and Kirsten wants a sexy picture from Travis. The guys don’t know what to do and Laurie tells them that to be happy they would just have to give the women what they wanted.

Grayson sits down with Jules to talk about his dad, Travis attempts sexy pictures with Laurie at the camera and Andy ignores Ellie by asking Bobby to dinner instead. It doesn’t work for Grayson and he goes to work instead of trying to talk to Jules. This storyline is a complicated one: on one hand, I really like Jules, but she needs to start accepting Grayson for who he is or it isn’t going to work. On the other, it is understandable because she wants to know that Grayson can trust her and their relationship enough to want to talk to her. Grayson though, would rather touch his tongue to a car battery than open up emotionally.

Ellie ends up being upset after all and goes after Andy at the restaurant he takes Bobby to. She tells him she didn’t want to be alone on Valentine’s Day; she just didn’t want to go out. Travis has a hard time with Laurie taking pictures of him and in the end it is Bobby who helps him with his photo.

When they get home, Andy surprises Ellie with some champagne and all of the neighbors Christmas decorations in a pile, lit up, since she complained about the decorations still being up seven weeks after Christmas. Andy and Ellie are a great couple. He always knows what to do to make her happy and they really bring out the best of each other.

After trying with Grayson, Jules ends up joining Ellie and Andy. Grayson comes along not long after and he gives Jules a DVD of Field of Dreams. He tells her that the scene with the dad and the son playing catch always makes him cry and they can watch it together. The foursome end the night watching the Christmas decorations burn. Back at the house, Kirsten gets Travis’ photo and even though it is creepy, she appreciates him going through the humiliation for her.

Is it just me or is anybody else sad about Cougar Town taking another hiatus? Thanks to ABC making room for Matthew Perry’s Mr. Sunshine, the cul-de-sac crew will not grace us with their presence until April. To get you through this time, here is some scoop.

Other good moments from "Cry to Me":

  • Neighbor Tom still trying to fit in.
  • The “bitch and ditch”: Bobby fakes dumping Laurie at a restaurant with her getting a free meal out of it. One of the funniest after the credits moments that this show has had.
  • The awkward photo session with Travis, Jules, Laurie and Bobby.
  • Laurie’s photo poses. The “here I am, deal with it” and the “warming my butt on the campfire.”
