Review: Damages, "It's Not My Birthday"

(S0305) My slapping a "Pie-O-My" into the title of this post is my not-so-subtle way of saying that there was more than a few allusions to The Sopranos in this intrigue-filled episode of Damages.

The dream sequence, which of course has been around forever (wonder when it roughly dates back to, the Greeks perhaps?), was taken to hilarious strange and surreal levels by The Sopranos, often wherein surprising realizations were made which led to serious consequences (see: Big Pussy going off the back of the boat at the end of Season Two).

That Patty Hewes (the always brilliant Glenn Close) is having dreams about horses (there's your Pie-O-My, a horse whose untimely death by arson led directly to another untimely death within his inner circle) and blood and her deceased confidant/henchman Uncle Pete can only mean that something big is coming down the line, right?

Oh, but there's so much else going on, perhaps more plot lines running than ever in this busy but engaging third season. There's the Tobins, of course, and the Bernie Madoff-sized stash laying around that Patty is trying to get her hands on (and perhaps even do some good with it in the end?) along with the remains of the ritzy Tobin clan. There's mistresses turning up dead, there's Tom Shayes (Tate Donovan doing yet another underplayed, great performance in this cast) "in five months," there's Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne) not playing quite the central role she has in the past (yet), and there's an entire end game at work here that we yet only have an inkling of.

All in all, it's another great season of Damages, which is racking up quite a little place for itself amongst all time legal thrillers on the telly we'd have to say at this point, no?

More notes on "It's Not My Birthday":

  • How freaking great is Martin Short as a dramatic actor (and who knew)? His understated portrayal of lawyer Leonard Winstone lets you in that there's a lot going on underneath the surface. I can't wait to see what this guy/character does next.
  • Why does Patty lie about her birthday, to either Tom or to the striking British interviewee for the open associate position? Mysterious relation to a creepy blood-drenched dream, or something deeper at work here?

Patty Hewes squares off with the D.A. over access to a key witness. A job candidate at Hewes & Shayes asks Ellen for insight into Patty.

  • Joe On The Tube:  Whom was Tom calling to say "I love you" ? We know from foreshadowing that he develops some kind of relationship with Ellen, but he also seems to really love his wife.
