Review: Damages, "Tell Me I'm Not Racist"
(S0310) It's making more sense for us to see Ellen dealing with her screw up sister Carrie's meth "I wasn't really meaning to distribute" problems when we see it's a nasty problem that Patty specializes in, and which the DA's office (where Ellen now works) can't even appear to touch.

And meanwhile, the pressure is rising on Patty (and Associates) as the Tobin case plaintiffs are asking for new attorneys to go after the missing Tobin fortune. Makes a lot of sense for these two storylines to collide head on: Ellen will once again be forced to choose between her family/morals and the ice cold Master of the Universe that Patty sees in her (and herself).

And then let's remember that all of this intriguing nonsense needs to lead up to 1)Tom Shayes (Tate Donovan) hooking up with Ellen 2) Tom Shayes dead 3) Patty's car (with Patty inside) smashed up a good bit 4) a hobo, a handbag, a complicated cover up, and a bunch of other stuff we'll find out more about in time!

Back in the present timeframe, the machinations this week are percolating, more than making up for a weaker episode last week. For instance, why is Mr. Zedeck directly opposing Leonard Winstone's seeming wish that poor/formerly mega rich Marilyn Tobin (Lilly Tomlin, who's just flat out great in a small role) go to Tanzania to do charity work? And what kind of power play is Winstone Sr. playing out over his son (money and the long con, as it turns out)? And speaking of power plays – ker pow! – Ellen's little friend at the D.A.'s office is more than ready to hang our heroine lawyer out to dry by racing to the D.A. with info about Ellen's collaboration with Patty's firm. And what's up with Ellen's picture of her childhood babysitter… if that's who she really is?

A huge clue to the Tanzania question plays out within this episode, which does a job at the least of beginning to close in on where the Tobin fortune is being stashed away. The charity. Dunh dunh dun!

But still, questions remain… questions that need answering, as our good pal and ale drinking buddy Gandalf likes to say.

More thoughts on "Tell Me I'm Not Racist":

  • The opening scene/dream sequence is in super hardcore horror movie mode, territory Damages has been trending more to this scene. Driving it through hardcore, one might say. I think this is the first time we've seen an Ellen (Rose Byrne) nightmare as opposed to Patty Hewes (Glenn Close)?
  • It's cool seeing Leonard Winstone and Stuart Zedeck in the same scene, even if it's over the phone, just because Martin Short and Uncle Junior, er, Dominc Chianese are so much fun to watch.
  • "Just tell me the truth about Thanksgiving." – Tom Shayes to Tessa Marchetti (Vanessa Ray)
  • And it's cool and bizarre to seeing Winstone getting his debaucherous party on.
  • "Tell me I'm not a racist." Lenny Winstone's dad, using code words, calling his boy!
  • It struck me as bizarre all over again that Ellen and Patty are kind of becoming friendly, even if Ellen claims that she's simply using her.
  • No flash forwards this week? Has that ever happened before on this show?

There's not a lot of Damages video available out there, so here's a Season 3 promo called Money:

Recap: Damages, "Tell Me I'm Not Racist"
Patty faces a professional disaster when her clients want her thrown off the Tobin case. A risky move by Tom Shayes could cost Ellen her job with the D.A.

From Around the Web: Damages, "Tell Me I'm Not Racist"

  • A.V. Club: At the risk of being overdramatic, I’m going to go ahead and declare this episode of Damages a return to form – at least a return to season three form – if only due to the complete absence of Frobisher’s maybe non-sequitur, maybe jaw-slacking-twist-in-the-making subplot.
  • TV Squad: Also earth-shattering -- at least for Ellen -- would be learning that the woman in her dreams and in the photo she found is her mother. Anyone else think that's how it will play out? Or is that too predictable for 'Damages'?
  • The Two Cents: The sound editing in the dream sequence is enough to recommend this episode, but it also has more than its share of staredowns and meaningful silences from virtually all the characters.
