The Golden Globes aired tonight on NBC and there were some surprising winners in the television categories.

For best drama the HBO show Boardwalk Empire took the trophy, ending the run of AMC’s Mad Men, which had been on a three-year winning streak. Another surprise was Steve Buscemi’s win for best actor in a drama for Boardwalk Empire. He had some tough competition with Jon Hamm, Hugh Laurie, Bryan Cranston, and Michael C. Hall also competing for the award, but managed to pull off the win. Also, cheers to Katey Sagal for winning best actress in a drama for Sons of Anarchy. Sagal is fantastic on the show and deserved the win.
Glee had a great night as well, beating out favorites Modern Family and 30 Rock to win best comedy for the second year in a row and Jane Lynch won best actress in a comedy for her portrayal of Sue Sylvester. The best surprise of the night came when Chris Colfer won for best supporting actor in a comedy as Kurt Hummel. When his name was announced he had a shocked look on his face. He gave a great speech, saying “to all the amazing kids who watch our show, who are constantly told no, by bullies at school that they can’t be who they are, well, screw that, kids.” Overall it was a fun night at the Globes with Ricky Gervais, once again, hilarious as host. Great to see Boardwalk Empire and Buscemi get well deserved recognition, but of course Mad Men and Breaking Bad were so astonishingly good this season that it seems a tragedy of sorts that neither grabbed the top spot. That's the endless debate inherent to awards or lists I guess !
