Quick Take: Jersey Shore, “It’s Gonna Be An Interesting Summer”
“How many times did I try to tell you that Ronnie was cheating on you, you dumbass!” – Snooki to Sammi

Review: Jersey Shore, “It’s Gonna Be An Interesting Summer”
(S0215) And so we pick up where last week’s cliffhanger left off to begin another edition of Jersey Shore. In other words, with all fist pump-infused hell breaking loose at the Seaside Heights house. Sammi and Jenni punch and claw at each other like it’s a Catfight for the Ages, with resulting hair weaves flying as fallout from the fracas.
We’ve seen many fights on Jersey Shore of course, but I noticed something that I had never seen before during this one: production crew people stepping in to help break things up. It happens pretty quickly so I actually had to go back and watch a few times. Interesting that they would choose to do that – I assume that this stems directly from legal action resulting from events depicted on MTV reality programming. Whereas it’s not a big hit to the bottom line if Teen Mom cast member Amber Portwood gets charged with a felony for punching boyfriend Gary Shirley on camera, it would be of major concern if a Snooki or Ron got thrown in the slammer over an on air incident involving MTV’s megahit.
Beyond that, the levels of conflict are pretty interesting to parse through beyond the mere salacious delight of watching the Jersey Shore gals go to “ding ding, Round Two” levels as Ron would say. Essentially it boils down to Sammi and Ron versus Jenni, Snooki, and new cast member Deena. But really the core hatred seethes between Sammi and Jenni/Snooki. And at its immature, desperately insecure heart it relates directly to Sammi’s feelings of shame and mistrust with regard to Ron’s extracurricular dealings in Miami Beach.
As much fun as the fighting was, it was something of a relief to move onto other doings. And it was a homecoming of sorts for cast and audience both to see the gang head back to Karma to club it up (Ronnie and Sammi stayed behind, looking miserable about it, of course). Upon the gang’s return to the house later that night, Jenni called boyfriend Tom and received a taciturn response. As Jenni made to hang up to allow a chirping Snooki to get on (in reality show-world no one has a cell phone and all must compete for a singular land line connected to a difficult-to-operate duck phone), Tom was able to fire off a perfectly deadbeat and snarky, “Happy anniversary to you too.” Whoops.
And meanwhile, The Situation and Vinnie brought a singular young lady back to the house, for whom which they amiably had negotiations over. The Situation seems to be quite a bit more mellow and laid back thus far this season, and why not considering he’s reportedly making $5 million this year thanks to his new stardom? In any event, Vinnie locked himself away in the guest room with the young lady, with The Situation settling on a peanut butter sandwich (and not Deena, who made it very clear that she would be a willing fallback option).
The cast is working the t-shirt shop on the boardwalk once again this summer, with Danny as boss man. This gets into slightly weird territory when you start to consider how much money the cast is making per episode and through outside engagements, sponsorships, and business ventures. In other words, these guys don’t need to be working at a low paying retail gig at all at this point, but it’s simply a construct to give them something to do to break up the partying, fighting, and GTL-ing as well as to provide means to position various groups together so that they can gossip, bicker, or commiserate apart from the rest of the house.
The Ronnie and Smami small “s” situation came back around quickly enough as the gang gathered for their traditional Sunday dinner as a family, with Ronnie/Sammi missing in action. “They know Sunday dinner’s Sunday dinner,” Pauly D said, perplexed. And later, everyone heads to the boardwalk amusement park at night, much to Sammi’s chagrin. Her pouty attitude is neon-glow obvious, and even club-deprived Ron has had enough. The episode ends with Ron and Sammi arguing back at the house as ever, over Miami and discretions and everything. At this point, Sammi’s out of friends in the house and on the outs with her boyfriend (all self-induced I might add).
Stay tuned as a special Monday night edition (9:00, MTV) of Jersey Shore is coming at us on January 17th.
