Jersey Shore’s The Situation keeps it slightly real on The Howard Stern Show

Jersey Shore phenomenon Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino paid a visit to Long Island native Howard Stern’s Sirius satellite radio show yesterday, and the results were rather interesting and entertaining.

While I only caught a few brief seconds of The Situation on the current season of Dancing With the Stars, I noticed that he was in a decidedly lower key mode than his manic, GTL-espousing self from the Jersey Shore. I’m not sure who the “real” Situation is (or would it be “what” the “real” Situation is?) but he maintained the relatively chill demeanor on Stern and ended up doing a fairly good job of charming everyone in the studio in the process.

Sitch, as his pal Pauly D calls him, talked about his background, which I found to be the most interesting and revealing piece of the interview as it got into how the caricature/character that would become known as The Situation was created. Essentially, Mike Sorrentino was some dude with great abs and an attitude who got fired from some kind of financial services gig and was forced to move back in with his parents in New Jersey (Mike is one of the few Jersey Shore cast members who actually hails from New Jersey, though he also has roots in Staten Island as well).

The Situation’s rise to stardom kicked off quickly after he became an underwear model (so perhaps Sitch and Mark Wahlberg may have a bit in common). Apparently, after only two weeks of modeling, Mike was “noticed” by a casting agent and invited to audition for what was then a VH1 pilot. After a protracted process that took around a year, Jersey Shore went to air and the rest, as they say, is history. Situational history.

Some other fun things that came out of the interview:

  • The Situation was thrown off his game most when Stern pressed him on exactly how big his “situation” is
  • Mike admitted that his ambition all along was to get into show biz and not just be a reality star (which puts him in league with approximately 100% of other reality cast members)
  • Stern wants him to hook The Situation up with his latest obsession: Jennifer Aniston. Stern fans following the David Arquette “storyline” likely got a chuckle out of this.
  • Stern asked about The Situation’s reputed $5 million per year salary these days, which comes from a huge array of GTL-infused business operations, including: a vodka called Devotion that has protein additives, Vitamin Water sponsorship, a jewelry company, an iPhone app for GTL (gym, tanning, and laundry services in the area), and workout book and DVD.
  • Sitch talks about trademarking phrases such as GTL, DTF (down to f—k), GFA (grenade free America). Howard added DTM (don’t touch me) for good measure.
  • Show staffer JD gets very upset with Sitch for some reason, adding, “I don’t sell GTL apps, sorry.” Sitch made an oddly compelling point in reaction to JD’s “hatorade” reaction, referencing that when you become a person that hates on others, you lose sight of your own goals. “I do hold grenade reform classes,” he said.
  • And in other Jersey Shore news:

  • Angelina will not be releasing a single called “I’m Hot,” Perez Hilton reports.
  • Jersey Shore Season Three is set to premiere on January 6th, 2011.

Now that Paul Kinsey (Michael Gladis) made a brief but splashy and phenomenal return during last night's Mad Men episode, "Christmas Waltz," there remains only one significant advertising pro from the early seasons who has not made an appearance in the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce era.
