Modern Family, "Phil on Wire": listening and understanding

Quick Take: Modern Family, "Phil on Wire"

Review: Modern Family, "Phil on Wire"
(S0303) What I love most about Modern Family is that every character always has a storyline, whether its big or small. No one is ever forgotten here.

This week we open with Gloria and Jay sharing their bed with another family member. No, not Manny, he's sleeping on the floor at the foot of the bed, it's none other than Stella, the dog. The same dog that Jay tried getting rid of last season but ultimately fell in love with. She has somehow moved in to the number one spot where Jay is concerned and has left Gloria feeling jealous with numerous shoes chewed up. Stella even showers with Jay, a little weird and too much togetherness if you ask me.

Over at Cam and Mitchell's, Cam has decided to go on a juice fast. While Mitchell is supportive in front of Cam, inside, and on camera, he hates it. He knows the stages of Cam's demise when he is on a diet and he is fearful since in a few days  they will be going to a party at his boss' house and there is no way of knowing how Cam will be. But, he decides to join Cam on the diet to offer moral support. The first stage that Cam goes through is a clean sweep of the house of any and all sweets. Instead of throwing it all out Mitchell takes the bag of goodies to Claire's house where Luke gets his hands on it and doesn't share. Needless to say he becomes a bit hyper and ends up with a stomach ache.

And let’s not forget about the Dunphy's, Phil has decided to complete a lifelong dream of being a tightrope walker and Claire gives a lesson in master parenting. Alex ends up being in Haley's math class, which is the worst news ever for her. Claire thinks she's using reverse psychology on them when she tells them she's going to call the principle to get Alex out of the class and how they missed out on an opportunity to help one another. After discussing the situation, Haley agrees to let Alex into her cool inner circle in exchange for copying Alex's math homework and allowing Haley to cheat off her tests. Definitely don't think this is what Claire was thinking about when she said master parenting.

In the end, Gloria becomes Jay's number one again and the dog must sleep outside their bedroom door. I think Jay seeing Gloria with one of his shoes in his mouth trying to teach the dog to chew it helped him prioritize things. And while Mitchell was so concerned about Cam during their fast, he really should have been paying attention to himself. During his boss' speech about an experience with a sea lion he completely loses it and starts crying. I do believe I saw some drool coming from his mouth because he was blubbering so much. He and Cam leave the party and in the next shot Mitchell is in the ocean calling for the sea lion and Cam is trying to console him. They both end up being knocked over by ocean waves as everyone from the party looks on from the deck of the house. The real winner in this episode was Phil, who accomplished his goal of being a tightrope walker and now has two ways to cross his yard.
