The Daily Show, “Howard Stern”: media kings

Quick Take: The Daily Show, “Howard Stern”
While the Stern interview was not a classic, it’s always good to see two media kings (one the self proclaimed King of All Media, the other merely the top television talk show host-meets-fake news anchor) at the top of their game.

Review: The Daily Show, “Howard Stern”
(S1629) I don’t catch the typically brilliant Daily Show as much as I would like. But when a guest of the caliber of a Howard Stern stops by I make my way to the nearest media device that has access to TDS to check in on what’s going on.

This is the part where I’m going to go off on an aside about Sirius-XM Satellite radio and Howard Stern, which I always do whenever and wherever I have an excuse to do so. Stern has been making the rounds of late to pitch his show – including making an appearance during Pierce Morgan’s first week taking over Larry King’s slot on CNN – and, in particular, the Sirius-XM brand and the fact that it’s now accessible on various mobile phone apps. The problem – which has nothing to do with Stern, who is as funny and engaging as ever – is that the technology team at Sirius-XM is absolutely atrocious.

I’ve been a Sirius-XM subscriber for years, and spend a goodly amount of time listening to the Stern show intermixed with electronic, jazz, hip hop, and other musical stylings while I’m working throughout the day… which means that I use the web as the medium to absorb the Sirius service. Let me add that I pay an extra premium to enjoy this entertainment experience on the web on top of the couple hundred bucks a year that’s required to subscribe to the Sirius-XM service. The accessibility of the service has always been a bit sketchy. However, a recent “upgrade” has been godawful, to the point where I have literally not been able to login for the last few weeks. Entreaties and pleas to customer service have produced boilerplate responses many days later. Let us say in short that they have been unhelpful.

This is all to say that I have sadly had to make the decision to not renew my subscription to Sirius-XM, so I will be reduced to catching Stern during his occasional television appearances. That is all segue back to saying that Stern, even while fighting a cold, was great and funny in bantering with Jon Stewart, who is one of the few media personalities who can match Stern wit-for-wit. They discussed the first time that Stern appeared on Stewart’s show, where he was the very first guest on a much younger and greener Stewart’s MTV show some 20 years or so. Stern also brought up the last time that Stewart was on the Stern show, where “gay dancing” ensued, in which Stewart was dressed up in some kind of admiral’s uniform. Stewart thanked Stern for having the respect to not dress him up as an enlisted man.

While the Stern interview was not a classic, it’s always good to see two media kings (one the self proclaimed King of All Media, the other merely the top television talk show host-meets-fake news anchor) at the top of their game.

Now that Paul Kinsey (Michael Gladis) made a brief but splashy and phenomenal return during last night's Mad Men episode, "Christmas Waltz," there remains only one significant advertising pro from the early seasons who has not made an appearance in the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce era.
