The Marriage Ref, "Episode 2": Jerry Seinfeld, Tiny Fey, Eva Longoria Parker

Quick Take: The Marriage Ref, "Episode 2"
The second episode is the "series premiere," expands to an hour, and is still great.

Review: The Marriage Ref, "Episode 2"
(S0102) Even though this is the second episode of The Marriage Ref, NBC considers this the "series premiere." The first edition was a half hour and called a "sneak preview." In any event, the series itself is an hour, and seemed to jump right into the first story a little more quickly. The pacing of the show is lightning quick, from the opening intro to Papa's snappy hosting/ref duties, to the editing of the story clips. That's all to the good as this show goes down super easy, light, and smooth. With a nice side of observational snark, of course, which is the Seinfeld specialty.

Seinfeld's comments about the couples continues to dominate the show's strongest moments, but he's well adept at sitting back and letting his co-panelists shine as well. Another stellar panel this week, by the way: Jerry Seinfeld himself, Tina Fey, and Eva Longoria Parker.

My only question at this point is whether the hour long version of this show will have legs week after week, but right now it represents the best of the unscripted "reality"/talk show format.

Thus far they are doing a great job thus far with casting of married couples and topics for discussion, so hopefully that will continue. The couple where they wife insists that the dining room table is for Thanksgiving-only and demands that men should know how to do "things around the house" is classic.

More thoughts on the second episode / series premiere:

  • It's still weird, interesting, and cool that Marv Albert is the show announcer. And the David Blaine-in-a-box bit with reference to the flossing in bed wife worked specifically because it lasted literally 15 seconds.
  • I was a little more okay with the monologue/intro from Tom Papa this week because it's super short and the topic was very on point (weirdness of having breakfast with fellow bed-and-breakfast guests).
  • It's a treat to see Fey and Seinfeld, two of the smartest comedic minds in the biz, playing off each other this week.
  • Marv Albert "calling" the pickup game in the wedding ring wearing basketball dude segment is simply amazing.

Recap: The Marriage Ref, "Episode 2"
This week's married couple's disputes: a husband who spends too much time grooming, a wife who wants her husband to stay out of the dining room, and a man who won't wear his wedding ring when out playing basketball with the boys.

  • Reality Wanted: When asked if flossing is a bathroom activity that should not leave the bathroom, all three panelists respond with a resounding, YES!! Case closed.
