Review: The Marriage Ref, "Tracey Morgan, Kathy Griffin, and Nathan Lane"
(S0107) Each week of The Marriage Ref brings a different chemistry and tone based on the makeup of the panel. This week was very unique due to the oddball cast of Tracey Morgan, Kathy Griffin, and Nathan Lane. Griffin brought out her signature standup/reality TV shtick early in announcing that Morgan hit on her assistant in the Green Room, while meanwhile host Tom Papa asked Lane how issues play out in the "gay community."

So, not nearly the combative atmosphere (and explosive comedy) as the episode with Larry David and Madonna (and can you think of an stranger pairing than that?), but I'll say flat out that Tracey Morgan is one of the funniest and most spontaneous comics in the game today, so watching him react to the couples' machinations with his antics made this show well worth stopping by.

Otherwise though, it may have been due to the somewhat less interesting couples (solitaire vs. fishing? green bean casserole? who really cares) but I found myself wishing for the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Alec Baldwin, and Tina Fey from panels past for their priceless observations (though Lane brought out some great ones late). An all 30 Rock panel of Baldwin, Fey, and Morgan? Oooh… I could roll with that.

More thoughts on this week's Marriage Ref:

  • I like how Nathan Lane leads with "Well, porn…" when asked what there is to do online besides Solitaire on a computer, then goes onto news and "other stuff."
  • "If I was out fishing, we wouldn't be arguing right now." – Solitaire Husband
  • "Solitaire is a one-person game." – Solitaire Wife
  • I love Nathan Lane for blurting out that he's taken an immediate dislike to the Solitaire couple.
  • What the hell is a "K2 meter" that tracks paranormal activity? It looks like a garage door opener. Who you gonna call? (I wrote both those lines before they were dropped by Lane and Morgan, respectively, I swear!)
  • "I would like to see the ghost of Ernest Borgnine." – Tracey Morgan
  • Forget American Idol: Howard Stern would kill on this show.
  • I enjoyed the green bean casserole montage.
  • "You're gayer than I am." – Nathan Lane to Kathy Griffin

Now that Paul Kinsey (Michael Gladis) made a brief but splashy and phenomenal return during last night's Mad Men episode, "Christmas Waltz," there remains only one significant advertising pro from the early seasons who has not made an appearance in the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce era.
