TV Geek Army Field Report: apocalyptic vintage edition

I never cease to be fascinated by television programming being aired on the outer fringes of the basic cable dial. I find it’s a little bit like going into a cool and funky vintage store: there’s some crap, a lot that’s just kind of so so, but some of it is brilliant and precious and feels like a find that you can take home and incorporate as your own.

apocalypse PA

Tonight, for example, I’d fully recommend Nick Swardson’s Pretend Time to friends of mine that have a certain demented and twisted sense of humor (like yours truly). And while a show title like 16 & Pregnant might imply exploitive reality TV to some, MTV is producing some of the most compelling documentary-style footage for kids with its 16 & Pregnant/Teen Mom series, viewing well worth watching as both entertainment and an education on how difficult life is for families who find themselves in a certain situation.

So that’s all to say that when a show called Apocalypse PA (a show about people “who think society is too reliant on technology and have had a lifelong desire to live a self-sufficient lifestyle”) is set to debut on the History Channel, it perks my interest as I might portend that it will fall either on the crap or brilliant side of the vintage store spectrum… or both? That’s the beauty of delving into the weird and wonderful side of the television spectrum.

Here’s what else is popping on tonight’s TV:

Now that Paul Kinsey (Michael Gladis) made a brief but splashy and phenomenal return during last night's Mad Men episode, "Christmas Waltz," there remains only one significant advertising pro from the early seasons who has not made an appearance in the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce era.
