Breaking Bad Insider Podcast invites you inside the lab of genius

If you're a fan of Breaking Bad and enjoy downloading and dialing up a podcast every now and again, you owe it to yourself to check out the Breaking Bad Insider Podcast. Episodes are being made available each Tuesday following new episodes of Breaking Bad, so while there will likely be a lengthy hiatus coming up soon as the beloved series soon breaks at the midpoint of its final season – the final eight episodes will air next summer – you can always dive back into the archives of the podcast for a treasure trove of insight and banter from creator and showrunner Vince Gilligan, cast, and crew.

I caught the insider podcast after the recent and brilliant episode, "Dead Freight," which involved a swashbuckling train heist and ended on a wickedly gut punchy note (a Breaking Bad specialty, of course).

Amongst the things we learn on this podcast episode alone:

  • Vince Gilligan has been known to feint at the movies.
  • The idea of centering an episode around a train robbery came from an earlier one involving a tractor trailer heist.
  • Breaking Bad writer/director George Mastras talked about the technical and logistical challenges
in directing his very first episode, one which involved an additional camera crew and the complexities  of shooting the train sequence.
  • The engineering and mathematical research into the weight and mixing of methylmine and water
  • The difficulty of finding trains that are not completely tagged by graffiti!  We've got to "chase these rat bastards down," Gilligan amiably notes.
  • One of the Under Siege sequels also uses the concept of "dark territory," a geographical area that is inaccessible to electronic communication.
  • The production included having a "tarantula wrangler" on set.
