Chuck's Joshua Gomez: a geek after my own heart

Joshua Gomez had me at Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. I haven't ordered it yet, but predecessors Oblivion and Morrowind rocked my day-glo tights back in high school and undergrad, so I'm sure it's totally worth installing an entirely new graphics card for. Again.

Gomez partook of an interview conference call regarding the upcoming episode “Chuck versus the Frosted Tips,” the looming end of Chuck’s fifth and final season, and his own inner geek. For those of you just tuning in, Joshua Gomez has portrayed Morgan Grimes since the beginning of the series.  Morgan has been Chuck Bartowski’s best friend since childhood and most recently become the newest nerd to inadvertently download the top secret Intersect computer into his brain.

Since the upgrade, Morgan’s new skills have been quite literally going to his head. In “Chuck versus the Bearded Bandit” we saw Morgan ditch Chuck, Casey, and Sarah for a rival spy agency when he felt that they downplayed his role, ordering him to stay in the van during missions, and pawning him off on Chuck as an asset, as though he needed a babysitter or something, which, let’s face it, he kinda does. Gomez acknowledges that he anticipated a challenge in winning fans over to Intersect Morgan, but says, “I’m really kinda satisfied with what I got to do with this character. I took him where I wanted to go and I feel satisfied.”

When asked to describe Morgan, Gomez states that he’s “...a kinda free spirit. A bit impetuous. Captain of his own ship.” Regarding the current changes Morgan has undergone since downloading the Intersect during season four’s finale, Gomez states, “He’s grown up, but still very much those things.” He goes on to say that Morgan is loyal, a best friend, and someone to have in a firefight, though ultimately amending that last sentiment with “Wait, not in a firefight. I’m awful in a firefight.”

It's okay, I'm fairly certain I'd be bad in a firefight too, however, I'm pretty sure I have an 80s glam metal CD laying around here somewhere (which is what Morgan rocks out to on his bicycle at the moment, according to Gomez) and while I'm partial to picking DC over Marvel, I can appreciate the extensive X-men comic book collection that Joshua Gomez boasts, saying "[My nerdiness] was out looong before Chuck."

Gomez describes the climate on set as "bittersweet" with the knowledge that the end of Chuck is approaching, but "It's easier now, knowing our fates and we're really just... relishing every minute of it."

Post-Chuck plans are still mostly up in the air, but Gomez revealed that he's currently working on an unnamed pilot with his brother, Rick Gomez.

Chuck airs Friday nights at 8pm on NBC.
