Review: Fear Factor, "Scorpion Tales"
(S0701) Sure, there are plenty of celebrities who are more traditionally "successful" than Joe Rogan. But you would be hard pressed to find another person in show business with a resume as varied and diverse as Rogan's.

The guy has literally done it all. In the mid-'90s he co-starred on the sitcom NewsRadio. Then in 1997 he took on color commentary duties at the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Rogan is an accomplished stand-up and has recently experienced success as a podcast host.

His most high profile job came in 2001 when he was hired to host Fear Factor, an NBC game show where contestants compete in dangerous and disgusting stunts. The show went off the air in 2006, but now in December of 2011, Fear Factor is back with Joe Rogan once again taking on the hosting duties.

After its five-year hiatus, not much has changed. Rogan's hair is a little thinner, his upper body is a little bulkier, and his arms are more tatted-up, but everything else is basically the same. The stunts are still absurd and the eating challenges are still gross. Actually, the eating challenges are even more nasty than they were a decade ago due in no small part to the prevalence of high definition televisions. If you thought watching a woman chew up a hissing cockroach was bad in standard def, just wait until you see it in HD.

In Season Seven's premiere, "Skorpion Tales," four teams of two try their hands at three stunts. The team who performs the best takes home $50,000. In the first stunt, the teams must repel out of a helicopter, jump into the back of a moving truck, dig through barrel to find flags and jump out of the truck before it plummets into a mountain of explosives. The sister team of Natalie and Olivia only manage to grab five flags and are sent packing.

The second challenge involves diving into a barrel of sludge and retrieving a box full of live scorpions. Once the box is located, it must be opened and the scorpions inside must be eaten whole. Father and son team Anthony Sr. and Anthony Jr. go first. Sr. struggles to force down one of the crunchy scorpions. "Swallow his ass!" Jr. screams. Alas, Jr.s encouragement is not enough and they are eliminated.

In the finals, brother and sister team Alex and Amanda square off against creepy mother and son team Monica and Matias. (Insert Gillian Darmody joke here). The teams are strapped to the grill of a cement mixer as it smashes through obstacles. Pinned to the obstacles are flags and as they teams smash into the obstacles they are to grab as many flags as they can. Alex and Amanda reign supreme and walk away with the cold, hard cash.

Rogan is great, love him on podcasts. I enjoy Fear Factor for the most part but really can't stand the gross segments, especially involving the eating of creepy stuff.

It is great to see Joe Rogan back on Fear Factor. It has been too long. I enjoyed the return episodes. It didn’t surprise me that this show would rate so high. Even though the Blood Bath scene may have been a little over the top for most people, those who actually enjoy watching Fear Factor are the ones who don’t mind seeing the bloody scenes. I wasn’t able to see the premier on Monday because of a trip I was getting back from. To add to the disappointment, I spaced setting my DVR to record the shows! Working for DISH, I've become very familiar with DISH Online and I know there are many shows that are available that don't require you to subscribe. Fear Factor is one of those shows! I enjoyed watching it and I hope that future shows are just as good! Well, with less cow blood that is.
