Friday Night Lights Season Five DVD set includes "hidden" farewell speech

Hidden songs are awesome. I don't know about you, but when I was a kid and I got a new CD I would always press the fast forward button as soon as the final song ended in hopes that I'd stumble across that 35 to 85 seconds of dead air before the disc restarts - the tell-tale sign of a hidden track. I would admit that my favorite hidden song is probably "All By Myself" by Green Day. I know, not the most original choice, but I grew up in the nineties, Dookie was my shit (pun intended) in elementary school.

It seems like hidden songs might become an unintended casualty of the listening public's decision to go digital, which is kind of unfortunate. It must be a challenge to sneak an extra 15 minutes into a song if each track is purchased individually and the length's of the tracks are prominently displayed on iTunes.

While hidden tracks on albums and CDs have had a long and illustrious history, I can't think of many examples of the concept being translated to DVDs. Until now. Entertainment Weekly's Dan Snierson has uncovered a hidden DVD extra that will be included on the Friday Night Lights Season 5 DVD set (check it out here).

The hidden extra -- Coach Taylor's final farewell speech -- was supposed have played over the montage at the end of the finale, but the decision was made to leave the audio on the cutting room floor. “Because the images ran so long, it was hard for us to figure a graceful way to fit in the speech. Also, I just wanted to let the images stand for themselves... I loved the speech and the way Kyle did it —  and it was one of the things I was really looking forward to in the finale — but after looking at it both ways, I realized that the episode was stronger without it,” Jason Katims, FNL's executive producer, told EW.

While it was nice to hear Coach Taylor's voice, and I would never turn down the opportunity to listen to one of his locker-room speeches, I agree with the decision not to include this audio in the final cut of the finale. Honestly, it wasn't one of Coach's better speeches and I don't think it would have added anything to the scene. That said, there's really no such thing as a "bad" Eric Taylor speech, so it was cool that they decided to include this little extra feature in the DVD.
