GCB

Review: GCB, "Pilot"
(S0101) GCB has an amazing cast. Leslie Bibb is an underrated actress who is as adept at drama as she is at comedy. Kristin Chenoweth is a noted powerhouse who has been a favorite of mine since The West Wing and Annie Potts is a television legend who can really do no wrong. The rest of the cast is just as impressive. The only problem is that they are all given very little to work with.

The basic premise of the show is that former high school mean girl Amanda (Bibb) is forced to move back to Texas and live with her mother (Potts). Upon her return, all her old enemies conspire to get revenge...but in a funny way.

The show wastes no time producing “drama.” In the first half hour, Amanda is propositioned by a rival's husband, is humiliated by another rival and locks horns with her mother over the raising of her children. The closest thing to a real moment comes when Amanda apologizes to her old whipping girl Heather (Marisol Nichols) and the two of them come to an understanding. In case you haven't been beaten over the head enough, the show can easily be described as Desperate Housewives ultra-bitchy version.

My biggest problem with the show is that I've seen it all before. I understand that it's based on a book but it seems like someone took the scripts for Desperate Housewives, Mean Girls and Friday Night Lights, threw them in a blender and cast some beautiful women. What they forgot to add was original dialogue and believable situations.

There is certainly an opportunity for real moments. One of Amanda's rivals has a gay husband and their is no shortage of hypocrisy to comment on, but the drama should really be saved for someone else. I'm not quite sure who, though.

The biggest disappointment has to be the casting of Nick Krause as Chenoweth's son, Landry. Krause was excellent in The Descendants and deserves a better opportunity to show off his skills.
