Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling: just let your ‘80s nostalgia G.L.O.W. [Old School TV 101]

Greg Barbrick’s recent review of a Celebrity Bowling DVD set from the 1970s put me in mind of oddball sporting events on television during my childhood.

Now, I’m more of a child of the ‘80s but I still recall that time – not so far distant now but seemingly so – when we were much more of a captive audience in terms of television selection. This was particularly true during the daytime on the weekend, that period after morning cartoons when we as children were expected to do such activities as “going outside to play.”

When we were stuck inside (or developing our early predilections for being militant TV geeks), we were witness to a great many sporting events… and other events that might be described as part sport, part spectacle, and part something else entirely.

Enter G.L.O.W., or the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. Wikipedia describes the phenomenon as follows: “Colorful characters, beautiful women, and over-the-top comedy sketches were integral to the series' success. Most of the performers were actresses, models, dancers, and/or stunt women hoping to get in to show business through wrestling.”

But, really, that doesn’t do it justice. I defy you to watch the following and not get sucked into a time warp back to 1986 not felt since initial screenings of Hot Tub Time Machine:

Ha Ha Eric, I remember GLOW too, how hilarious! Back in the mid-eighties one of our local independent staions would run something like 12 hours of wrestling back to back on Saturdays - from like noon to midnight. It was heaven...LOL! GLOW came towards the end of the marathon, as did another female wrestling show, Powerful women Of Wrestling, or POW! Too funny!

I watched every chance I got, and loved the show, until the day a woman was severely injured and the show got kind of weird for me after that. A miscalculated move caused one of the combatants to have her arm pulled out of socket and it was quite shocking to me to witniss that kind of thing in the midst of a typical staged wrestling show.
