Greatest Party Story Ever: drunker Drunk History?

Remember Dr. Katz, Professional Therapist? Sadly, probably a lot of the young comedy loving folk won't have even heard of the great Comedy Central show from the late '90s.

I'm reminded of Dr. Katz though when looking at MTV's Greatest Party Story Ever (which, if you're interested, premieres on Thursday, January 14th, 2016 at 10:30/9:30c. Dr. Katz, created by comedian Jonathan Katz as it turns out, was an animated show ostensibly about the life and times of a soft spoken and quirky therapist. But really it was a vehicle for guest starring comedians to do comedy bits "in therapy," which were then animated in hilarious fashion.

greatest party story ever

Ever since, many other shows have attempted a similar concept with varying degrees of success. Comedy Central's Drunk History is a modern and highly successful variation of the form. The concept is stupid simple: comedians get drunk (like really drunk) and give their k'tankered versions of historical tales while actors play it seriously while hilariously perform the drunken tale. Simple concept, but very well executed, and it works.

Greatest Party Story Ever sticks with a simple concept: people tell stories about, well, you guessed it, crazy party stories. And then the wrinkle on theme is that it animates the stories in all different kinds of animation styles. Or as MTV describes it: "The funniest, craziest, most unbelievable stories will be brought to life through first-person storytelling & unique styles of animation."

Here's the trailer:

Whether or not the show works hinges on how entertaining the stories themselves are, and then how well the animation works in playing off the storytelling to comedic effect. Will it work? Who knows, but as anecdotal evidence, this clip/story called "Tracy's Grandma" works pretty well:

It has the patented MTV/VH1 reality show production quality, with light and offbeat music and tight editing. And the story itself, about a friend's grandma getting... a little bit aggressive with the story teller, is "outrageous" while being well within the extremes that you get across the spectrum of basic cable television these days.

In "I Kissed Your Girl," we get a classic tale of high school college-y frat culture, and you know this by the time the storyteller announces that, "I got drunker and drunker and drunker and drunker." Crazy, right? The upshot involves a twist that is right out of Revenge of the Nerds (read: the scene where the one nerd dude is like, "All jocks think about is sports. All nerds think about is sex." Oh wait, what? You haven't seen that either?!).

And as a bonus, here's some classic Dr. Katz for you. Enjoy:

Greatest Party Story Ever Season 1 will include 10 episodes. Think you'll be setting your DVR to check it out?
