Hot In Cleveland Delivers Summer Comedy Heat

The city of Cleveland needs a boost.  And luckily for the city just as Lebron James departs, Betty White and an ensemble that includes Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and Valerie Bertinelli comes in the form of hit comedy “Hot In Cleveland”.  The pretence of the show is that a trip to Paris gets detoured, allowing Leeves, Malick and Bertinelli to discover Cleveland as a great place to meet men. Who would have thought: Cleveland over Paris?  But I am thrilled the trio set their luggage down and moved into a rented home with Betty White as the home’s caretaker.

I must admit, I expected a show with a series of oneliners with such a rather oddly combined cast.  But Hot in Cleveland really delivers great comedy. Joy (Jane Leeves), Victoria (Wendie Malick), and Melanie (Valerie Bertinelli) have great chemistry and deliver a fast-paced sitcom.  It is surprisingly edgy at times and Betty White is often the one with the cutting comment as she deadpans to the women lines such as, “A smart jockey always sits straight up on the horse,” when explaining sex.  The show never descends into eye-rolling territory, however, and the sharp writing is refreshing.

Elka (Betty White) delivers lines that are bound to hit Twitter as well, such as with, “Nice girls keep their cookies in a jar,” when referring to Melanie’s breasts.  Elka’s love interest on the show is Carl Reiner, with Tim Conway making an appearance as a rival for her affection.  These comedic veterans do not disappoint.  While Cleveland is supposed to be the fountain of single men, the women fail in their attempts to find love, or at least thus far.  It is difficult not to find the humor in a good looking man named “Chester” who lives up to his name when he removes his jacket.  And even though the joke is obvious the delivery is brilliant.  The first season's final episode airs on August 18th and while Lebron is gone, I hope that these girls are here to stay.

Great overview! I've been meaning to check in on this show, if only to see what all the buzz is about. And Betty White and George Takei are pop cultural phenomenons, who knew ?

I love this show too! Even though I find the sitcom format a little tired, this show is fun anyway.
