House of Lies

Review: House of Lies, "Gods of Dangerous Financial Instruments"
(S0101) There's a lot going on in the first few minutes of House of Lies. In addition to meeting Marty Kaan (Don Cheadle), his family and his co-workers, the audience gets a crash course in management consulting in the form of Marty's asides to the viewer. It occurred to me that there was only one way to make sure everybody watching understood what management consultants actually do and that's how it was done.

Along with the education on consulting, we learn quickly that Marty and his team care more about money and sex than anything else. Strippers, lesbians, bathroom sex, VIP rooms... we get it. They are not nice people. However, the show makes it very clear that the only people worse than Marty and his team are the people they work for and/or his competition.

There's no doubt that House of Lies has a great cast. Don Cheadle is a brilliant actor and I'd watch him do just about anything. I adored Kristin Bell as Veronica Mars and this show could be a great follow up for her. My only concern is about the staying power of House of Lies on the whole.

Showtime already has a show about a reprehensible guy with a family who supports him and they also have a show about a guy who insists on having sex with every hot woman he meets, so what is it about House of Lies that makes it different from the rest? At this point, we don't know, but I'm willing to stick around and find out.

I'm not sure I agree that forcing the action to a screeching halt to Cheadle can speak directly to the camera is the "only one way to make sure everybody watching understood what management consultants actually do." In fact, I could have grasped their purpose simply through the pilot's plot. The only thing those freeze-frame, broken 4th wall scenes did was explain jargon that was virtually useless to understanding what was happening on screen. Even with the unnecessary explainations, I'm still not 100% sure what a "data dump" is...not that I care what a "data dump" is.
