Southland

Review: Southland, "Community"
(S0403) At this point, a review of Southland almost seems unnecessary. I suppose instead of telling you that the show is great, I should highlight examples of what makes it so.

I love the new addition of Captain Rucker (Carl Lumbly). Lumbly is one of the most underrated actors ever to be on TV. He's played, cops, superheroes, secret agents and more and as the new hard ass in charge of uniforms, he is amazing.

I'm really enjoying the shake up of the partners this season. Cooper (Michael Cudlitz) and Tang (Lucy Liu) are working so well together that the pity I felt for Cooper last season has disappeared and I would never have thought one of the new Charlie's Angels could make one of my favorite shows more enjoyable. Likewise Sammy (Shawn Hatosy) and Ben (Ben McKenzie). Because of Sammy's intense experiences with the gangs in the area, he is teaching Ben some valuable lessons that he never learned when he was a rookie.

The aspect of Southland that I enjoy the most has to be the moral dilemmas it portrays every week. Last week, Ben assaulted a girl and ended up a YouTube celebrity. That girl assaulted him first and was interfering in an arrest, so did he make a mistake?

This week, a woman is murdered as revenge for preying on her own neighborhood and swindling people out of their homes. Clearly, she was a bad person, but does she deserve to be killed and dumped in a ravine? What about the guy who did it? He's homeless and an addict. Sending him to jail would probably be the best thing for him. I'm just glad I don't have to make these kinds of decisions. Don't even get me started on the child molester.
