Supernatural: will there be a seventh season?

There has been much speculation and hand wringing about whether or not the CW's Supernatural will get the green light for a seventh season. While there has been no official word as yet, the signs are good... very good.

Season six new promo

The CW president, Dawn Ostroff responded to fans back in January, saying, “We haven’t officially picked anything up yet but [Supernatural] is creatively doing so well… so I can’t imagine we won’t pick it up.” The ratings have bobbed and weaved this season from episode to episode. However, the overall average is about the same in terms of overall viewers. Also, the CW will be losing one of their longtime anchor shows when Smallville pulls up stakes at the end of its tenth season when the series finale airs in May (P.S. If Clark doesn’t fly, really fly... I may just lose my mind after ten seasons of watching, and red Kryptonite and alternate reality flying just doesn’t count).

In terms of longevity, Supernatural should be considered an anchor show by the CW as well but after the schedule bump for its premiere (which followed a long hiatus between seasons) ratings suffered. This bump was a debacle that resonated with fans causing an Internet and Twitter firestorm

In short, it doesn’t make sense for the CW to not renew Supernatural for a seventh season. Cast member Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles have signed for a seventh season, so they are committed to another year if the network is ready and willing... and my gut says they are. I think even with the Internet buzz that Ostroff is stepping down this summer, it shouldn’t endanger the show. Supernatural is fairly consistent in terms of viewers and numbers. Of course, there are fluctuations from episode to episode, but that’s true for any show. Even with a potential new boss at the helm it does not have to mean doom; in fact, maybe if fans are very lucky the new blood will infuse the network and Supernatural with new life.

The CW is a small network. They aren’t NBC or ABC and Supernatural doesn’t have the budget of AMC’s The Walking Dead, but they have always been the ‘little engine that could’ on a network that has struggled but remained tenacious against the tide of larger networks. Yes, more times than not the CW has treated Supernatural like the red-headed stepchild but they’ve renewed the show for six seasons now and fans have helped to get the show a TV Guide cover (via Fan Favorite Vote)... how about them apples!

So, hopefully sooner rather than later we’ll hear that the Winchesters will be riding in the Impala for another season and hopefully there will be more seasons to come.

Final P.S. CW, if there isn’t a seventh season renewal, I’m just giving you a head’s up now that you can run from the fan ire but you can’t hide, and to use Castiel’s words from Season Five, “the collateral it’ll be immense.”

I am new to supernatural, I hope that they will return for the seventh season.  I and my son enjoy supernatural.  I like Sam and my son likes Dean.  so if CW picks up the seventh season we will both watch.  So we are hoping.

Hi Dawn

I agree with all your sentiments. Supernatural is a leader in its field, able to monster of the week, or create a fascinating arc that literally devours the viewers. I believe the more air time the show gets, especially this most excellent season, following the old biblical apocalypse of last could not have been easy - but once again the entire team has come up trumps.

Amazing episode Friday too - blew my mind. Robo Dean is always a favourite.

Hi Jacsiss,

I thought Friday's episode was "amazing", too. You're right about Robo Dean, although I figured he'd be a human road block between gramps and Sam if "The Wall" was put in possible danger. I'm looking forward to what the rest of the season holds.
