truInside: truTV takes us inside Tommy Boy, Bridesmaids, Airplane!

I'm a huge fan of comedy and the inner workings of the creative process, which is why I'm interested in checking out truInside, which premieres on Monday, February 29th, 2016 at 10:00/9:00c on truTV.

Here's a trailer:

As luck would have it (and put quotes around luck if you like), I have a long commute, which allows me to delve deep into all manner of podcasts. I'm particularly drawn to podcasts presided over by comedians who have real opinions and honest takes on the world. This runs the gamut from Adam Carolla's nasal and hilariously blunt rants on Los Angleles and the world at large, to Joe Rogan's pot-infused philosophical commentary ranging from stand up comedy to mixed martial arts, to Jay Mohr's humanistic vantage point and razor sharp impressions in the midst of a long career in stand up comedy, film, TV, and radio.

But the best of all may come in the form of lesser known but equally brilliant comedian and podcaster Tony Hinchcliffe, who runs a live podcast called Kill Tony, which invites comedians to sight up for the chance (at the "world famous" Comedy Store in Hollywood, California) to do 60 seconds of stand up comedy, followed by a round of roasting, mentoring, and bizarrely funny asides from Hinchcliffe and a panel of comedian "judges" which include the likes of Dom Irrera, Joey Diaz, Doug Benson, Jeff Garlund, Sarah Silverman, and any other number of top flight comedians working today.

That's all to say that some of my favorite moments from podcasts hosted by comedians and with comics and comedic actors and filmmakers are all of the amazing behind the scenes scoops about the movie making process (one of my all time favorites involves Howard Stern hilariously interrogating Quentin Tarantino about hanging out at Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's chateau in the south of France in the months leading up to the production of Inglorious Basterds.

The lineup of films that truInside is tackling in its first season is quite impressive (Airplane!, Election, Bridesmaids, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, The Jerk, Tommy Boy, Bull Durham and Heathers) and speaks to the fact that it has a very solid read on what makes a great and popular comedy as opposed to a more narrow definition held up by a small coterie of film critics. And the eclectic and funny cast of talent that truInside interviews about these films, including, Ellie Kemper, Weird Al Yankovic, Judge Reinhold, Carl Reiner, Maya Rudolph, and Michael Eisner should be a lot of fun as well.
